Human Rights Council – 11th session

Item 6
Australian statement

12 June 2009

Mr President

Australia welcomes the successful completion of another UPR session, and the presentation and adoption of the Working Group’s reports. We encourage States under Review to give due consideration to the recommendations made.

Australia is pleased that the UPR is now an established, regular feature of the Council. Australia supports a strong and credible UPR mechanism, which, if approached in good faith, will be a significant step in protecting and promoting human rights in all States.

Each state’s appearance before its peers is difficult. But the UPR is an important mechanism through which to consider our challenges and achievements with giving effect to our human rights obligations and reflect on how we can continually improve how we go about it.

Australia believes that it is important that the role of civil society in promoting human rights is recognised and respected. Civil society organisations should continue to have opportunities to meaningfully contribute to Reviews of States in the UPR.
