Australia welcomes the report and appreciates the insights shared by the panel.
Australia is progressing a domestic disability reform agenda which responds to the needs of persons with disabilities, their families and carers. Our National Disability Strategy 2010-2020 provides a framework for reforming public policy so that persons with disabilities can fully participate in all facets of Australian life.
Our landmark National Disability Insurance Scheme – which is currently being trialled – has been designed to provide community-level and individualised support for people with disability, their families and carers.
Australia is committed to supporting disability-inclusive development and is currently developing a new strategy to guide its approach. The strategy will be consistent with Australia’s broader aid strategy and will promote poverty reduction through sustainable economic development, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
Australia is particularly proud to support the UN Partnership to Promote the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and has contributed AUD 5 million to support the Partnership to date. We would encourage contributions from other donors.
Australia would welcome the panel’s view on how to develop the capacities of Member States to effectively implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
